This oil painting course invites students to explore the depths of their creative expression through a dynamic interplay of form, colour, light, and shadow. Designed for budding artists who wish to connect deeply with the world around them, this course emphasizes the importance of personal interpretation over literal representation. Students will learn to draw inspiration from both natural and handmade objects, using these as a springboard for artistic exploration.

Through a series of guided exercises, students will develop essential skills in observation, composition, and colour harmony. They will engage with various oil painting techniques to enhance their ability to convey mood, emotion, and narrative in their work. Watercolour- Beginner

Explore the gratifying process of watercolour in this beginner’s course. Learn to mix colours, use various brush techniques, find out about paper, and through repetition will gain confidence working with this medium. No previous experience is necessary.

Materials List

Winsor Newton Cotman Sketchers Box 12 colours

Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine, Cerulean Blue, Viridian Green, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Chinese White

Watercolor brushes round #12 or #10 and #6, and a flat 3/8" brush are all you will need. Taklon is a good synthetic. Sables are great. All brushes should bounce back to a point or their original shape. Wet them to find out. If they lie flat, not worth the trouble.

A palette (not plastic), ceramic is good, a white dinner plate will work

Paper: pad of cold press Strathmore Watercolour 300 or 400 series or other 140 lb or 300gm hot press wc paper made by Fabriano, Arches, BFK, or Johannot

For clean up and brush control, rags or a sponge are best as a means to control the amount of water in your brush. With a plastic bag for carrying

Join us for our 6 week Memory to Memoir Writing course where we’ll explore how you can turn your personal story into a well crafted memoir. In a safe and supportive environment we’ll look at a variety of topics, ranging from memoir vs autobiography, to navigating sensitive subjects, to the importance of theme, to creating images in writing, and everything in between.

Each week participants will be encouraged to try their hand at small exercises to help them develop their own “writing muscles” and unique style.

If you are looking to just develop some basic drawing skills or rediscover your drawing talents, this course is for you. An advantage of having drawing skills is that they can be applied to your work in most other art mediums and drawing can be enjoyed in most places at any time… easy to transport, store and cleanup. Participants will learn fundamental techniques and methods of drawing including such topics as the use of light and dark for realistic 3-D modelling of form, line, and perspective and more. Participants will work from objects and still life set ups to develop these skills.

Learn the basics of painting landscapes and botanicals with watercolours. Strengthen your composition and observation skills. Explore mixed media using ink and dry media with watercolours and explore a path towards self expression.

Watercolour Exploration Supply List – Spring 2026

Watercolour Paints

Start by using brand name "academic" or "student" grade watercolours until you can commit your resources to buying "artist" grade paints. Pre-packaged sets may be more economical. Watercolour tubes are preferred but pans can be used. If you already have watercolour paints, bring them and try them out. You can always add to your supplies later. If you are buying individual paint colours, at a minimum buy one cool blue, one cool red and one clear yellow. My favourite brands are Daniel Smith and QOR. Cotman by Winsor Newton is a good quality student brand.

Primary blue such as cobalt and/or ultramarine blue, primary red such as permanent rose or alizaren crimson, primary yellow such as aureolin yellow, lemon yellow or cadmium yellow.

You may wish to add the following colours to your palette: New Gamboge, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna or pick your favourite colours to try.

Watercolour Brushes

At a minimum you will need: one flat and one medium sized round watercolour brush. 1/2”, 1” flat synthetic brushes, the longer bristled brushes are preferred. I suggest Size 4, 8, 12 round synthetic watercolour brushes.

Optional brushes to add later: Rigger brush, size 1 round for fine lines, fan brush, wash brush for large areas

Watercolour Paper

140 pound cold press watercolour paper is recommended. Strathmore 300 series or other brands are suitable. The high rag content will tolerate scrubbing and washing. Full sheets 22"x30" can be bought and cut as required. For the lessons you will need two pieces of paper roughly 8x10 size (or 1/8 sheet) per class. I use a steel edged ruler for cutting sheets.

Palette

You need something to mix your paints on. A white plastic plate will work but you will need to wash your paints off

after each use. You can buy a round or rectangular palette with lid to transport and reuse your paints. Avoid coloured,

paper or Styrofoam plates.

Backboard

A hard surface waterproof board to place your paper on when painting. This will be propped up on a slight angle. A

corrugated plastic core sign board slightly bigger than your paper is light weight and reasonably priced. A plain white

colour is best.

Water containers & cleanup

Bring 2 old margarine tubs or containers to hold clean water. Tissues, paper towels or rags are needed to catch puddles, lift paint and for clean up.

I use a medium spray water spray bottle as a tool for applying water to paper. Mine was from Dollarama.

A sketch pad and pencil will be useful for planning your painting and taking notes. You are welcome to bring a camera to take photos of my demos.

Mixed Media supplies: India Ink, optional acrylic inks, permanent ink markers.

will create a Forest Scene and a Waves at the Shore Scene by using the

needle felting technique. All the required tools and materials will be

supplied to you. Demonstration and direct instruction will allow you to

create pieces that are ready for framing. No prior experience is required.

Experienced artists, artisans and returning students will be able to bring

their skill set and experience to this course as well.

In this course students practice the fundamentals of oil painting through a series of exciting and rewarding experiences. The course begins with familiarizing students with the basic materials used in oil painting, such as oil paints, brushes, canvases, palette knives, and palettes. Students learn how to set up a palette, arranging colours logically for easy access during the painting process. Practices start with simple subjects or still life arrangements for beginners. This allows students to focus on foundational skills without the complexity of more intricate subjects. One of the main practices in this course is experimenting the importance of underpainting by sketching and then creating a monochromatic underpainting where students are able to establish values and composition. Preparing the base or underpainting and having knowledge of mediums such as linseed oil or turpentine are essential practices for art students learning oil painting techniques. Following the theory of the complementary colours, students experiment mixing colors on their palettes to understand how different hues can be achieved. Students also practice with a wide-range brushes and techniques to achieve different textures experimenting the variety of brushwork and strokes that can be used in oil painting, from broad strokes to fine details. By Introducing students to famous oil paintings and artists they would encourage to practice on fundamental oil painting techniques, such as blending, layering, glazing, and impasto. At the end of each session students will be asked to conduct regular critiques where they can discuss their work, share insights, and receive constructive feedback, that fosters a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Description: For those with some previous experience using Soft Pastel. Explore more advanced techniques including mixed media. This combined course covers the material side of Soft Pastels, related art materials and techniques for students looking to deepen their current knowledge. Pastel artwork is considered a drawing medium but it's versatility allows painterly effects to be developed. Drawing skill is an asset but not required. Several methods of Pastel application will be explored resulting in the completion of 3 to 4 landscape works of art.

Materials List:

1 soft Charcoal Pencil
2 or 3 Graphite Pencils HB - 2B
1 Kneeded Eraser
1 roll of 3⁄4 in. *Plain Masking Tape*(No blue or green painters tape)
Basic Set of 24 Soft Pastels (Preferably Medium Softness or Softer, can be Student or Professional grade)
Textured pastel paper is required: Any textured or sanded pastel surfaces will work. 1 or 2 sheets 22” x 30” of a neutral gray or warm colour the sheet will be cut in quarters for use during the sessions. Brand recommendations: Canson Touch, Sennelier, Pastel Premier, Colourfix or Pastelmat. Some brands are available in smaller sized loose sheet or multi colour pads of 10 sheets which are very useful.

Basic Set of Tubed Watercolours (Professional Grade is not necessary unless you already have them)

In this Mokuhanga course, students will learn the traditional methods for creating a Mokuhanga (Japanese colour woodcut) print. Procedures include designing the image appropriate to the medium, transfer of the design to the block, and attention to traditional carving. After carving a “key” block you’ll transfer the image to the other side using the hanshita method which ensures perfect registration of additional carved out colour areas. Students can expect to use both sides of one 7” x 9” woodblock to achieve a three colour print on Japanese washi paper to produce a small edition of prints. Students should prepare at least one simple 3 colour image that is no larger than 6.5” x 8” of horizontal or vertical orientation.

Watercolour Exploration Supply List – Spring 2026

Watercolour Paints

Primary blue such as cobalt and/or ultramarine blue, primary red such as permanent rose or alizaren crimson, primary yellow such as aureolin yellow, lemon yellow or cadmium yellow.

You may wish to add the following colours to your palette: New Gamboge, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna or pick your favourite colours to try.

Watercolour Brushes

Optional brushes to add later: Rigger brush, size 1 round for fine lines, fan brush, wash brush for large areas

Watercolour Paper

Palette

You need something to mix your paints on. A white plastic plate will work but you will need to wash your paints off

after each use. You can buy a round or rectangular palette with lid to transport and reuse your paints. Avoid coloured,

paper or Styrofoam plates.

Backboard

A hard surface waterproof board to place your paper on when painting. This will be propped up on a slight angle. A

corrugated plastic core sign board slightly bigger than your paper is light weight and reasonably priced. A plain white

colour is best.

Water containers & cleanup

Bring 2 old margarine tubs or containers to hold clean water. Tissues, paper towels or rags are needed to catch puddles, lift paint and for clean up.

I use a medium spray water spray bottle as a tool for applying water to paper. Mine was from Dollarama.

A sketch pad and pencil will be useful for planning your painting and taking notes. You are welcome to bring a camera to take photos of my demos.

Mixed Media supplies: India Ink, optional acrylic inks, permanent ink markers.

Paint:

A basic set of Acrylic paint tubes is acceptable to begin with, other colours may be added.

Preferred list of colours:

Titanium white[large]
Hookers green
Napthol red
Ultramarine blue
Cerulean blue
Cadmium yellow med.
Indigo blue or Paynes grey
Yellow ochre
Burnt sienna
Burnt umber.[dark brown, may be replaced with other dark brown]

Brushes:

Please buy acrylic or nylon type brushes with long handles-short handles are for watercolour.
Bristle[hog hair] brushes are for oil ptg. but one is good for scrub technique in acrylics, get size 6 or 8
Complete sets of acrylic nylon brushes are available in a roll that is self storing
the following are essential sizes;
Flats-A one inch flat plus #4, 8 and 12
Rounds-#1, 3 and 6. Plus a size 0 or 1 script liner [very long nylon bristles]

Canvases:

Pre-finished sizes 16 by 20 inches and up. Please, no smaller.

Other materials:

Pad of pallette paper[ easiest cleanup]
Acrylic medium needed is --Matte medium, [others may be added later on if wished.]
Several yogurt containers for water
Masking tape roll
Pencil, HB, and 8 by 10 sketchbook.

Watercolour Exploration Supply List – Spring 2026

Watercolour Paints

Primary blue such as cobalt and/or ultramarine blue, primary red such as permanent rose or alizaren crimson, primary yellow such as aureolin yellow, lemon yellow or cadmium yellow.

You may wish to add the following colours to your palette: New Gamboge, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna or pick your favourite colours to try.

Watercolour Brushes

Optional brushes to add later: Rigger brush, size 1 round for fine lines, fan brush, wash brush for large areas

Watercolour Paper

Palette

You need something to mix your paints on. A white plastic plate will work but you will need to wash your paints off

after each use. You can buy a round or rectangular palette with lid to transport and reuse your paints. Avoid coloured,

paper or Styrofoam plates.

Backboard

A hard surface waterproof board to place your paper on when painting. This will be propped up on a slight angle. A

corrugated plastic core sign board slightly bigger than your paper is light weight and reasonably priced. A plain white

colour is best.

Water containers & cleanup

Bring 2 old margarine tubs or containers to hold clean water. Tissues, paper towels or rags are needed to catch puddles, lift paint and for clean up.

I use a medium spray water spray bottle as a tool for applying water to paper. Mine was from Dollarama.

A sketch pad and pencil will be useful for planning your painting and taking notes. You are welcome to bring a camera to take photos of my demos.

Mixed Media supplies: India Ink, optional acrylic inks, permanent ink markers.

Basic Set of 24 Soft Pastels (Preferably Medium Softness or Softer, can be Student or Professional grade)
Textured pastel paper is required: Any textured or sanded pastel surfaces will work. 1 or 2 sheets 22” x 30” of a neutral gray or warm colour the sheet will be cut in quarters for use during the sessions. Brand recommendations: Canson Touch, Sennelier, Pastel Premier, Colourfix or Pastelmat. Some brands are available in smaller sized loose sheet or multi colour pads of 10 sheets which are very useful.

Watercolour Exploration Supply List – Spring 2026

Watercolour Paints

Primary blue such as cobalt and/or ultramarine blue, primary red such as permanent rose or alizaren crimson, primary yellow such as aureolin yellow, lemon yellow or cadmium yellow.

You may wish to add the following colours to your palette: New Gamboge, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna or pick your favourite colours to try.

Watercolour Brushes

Optional brushes to add later: Rigger brush, size 1 round for fine lines, fan brush, wash brush for large areas

Watercolour Paper

Palette

You need something to mix your paints on. A white plastic plate will work but you will need to wash your paints off

after each use. You can buy a round or rectangular palette with lid to transport and reuse your paints. Avoid coloured,

paper or Styrofoam plates.

Backboard

A hard surface waterproof board to place your paper on when painting. This will be propped up on a slight angle. A

corrugated plastic core sign board slightly bigger than your paper is light weight and reasonably priced. A plain white

colour is best.

Water containers & cleanup

Bring 2 old margarine tubs or containers to hold clean water. Tissues, paper towels or rags are needed to catch puddles, lift paint and for clean up.

I use a medium spray water spray bottle as a tool for applying water to paper. Mine was from Dollarama.

A sketch pad and pencil will be useful for planning your painting and taking notes. You are welcome to bring a camera to take photos of my demos.

Mixed Media supplies: India Ink, optional acrylic inks, permanent ink markers.

Explore the expressive possibilities of acrylic painting combined with collage and mixed media in this layered, process-based course. Each week, students will learn a new technique — such as building texture, using collage imagery, stamping patterns, glazing, and storytelling through layered materials — first practicing on a small canvas board before applying the technique to a larger personal painting. Over the course of the program, each participant will gradually build a richly layered artwork that reflects their own creative voice, imagery, and themes. No previous mixed media experience is required.

The aims of this course are to strengthen your abilities to identify a theme and develop a small body of work, within a landscape genre. The course will begin with an introduction into landscape photography from the traditional to the contemporary. Participants will then develop their own project, with weekly guidance form the instructor and peer review. Finally, on the last evening, each person will give a short presentation of their images.

Please note, this is not a beginners’ course. An understanding of the basic principles of photography, e.g. exposure and depth of field. Also, knowledge of relevant digital applications and how to achieve them with your particular camera is expected.

Required: You must bring your own digital camera. It’s preferable to have a camera that has a means to have manual control, but not absolutely necessary. However, cell phone camera are definitely not suitable.

Do you wish you could paint a landscape? Then this course is for you!

A landscape is usually painted from top to bottom and background to foreground. After identifying the background, mid ground and foreground, we will deconstruct a landscape into its various elements (skies, trees and vegetation, water and shorelines) and practice by painting one element each week. You will see your landscape painting evolve, by adding one element at a time.

An understanding of the fundamentals and principals of perspective is mandatory for artists interested in representational drawing. Perspective drawing deals with how three-dimensional reality appears to the eye and how it is best represented on two dimensional surfaces such as a canvas, sketch pad, or an illustration board. Forms and structures of scenes and objects change their “look” from different viewpoints. During this course students will learn how to observe perspective phenomena and how to represent what they see on a piece of paper.
