Printmaking with BIG, the safer etching ground - hard ground / soft ground workshop Etching uses chemistry to incise ink-bearing lines and textures into a metal plate for printing. This workshop is an introduction to products and practices for a 'greener' printmaking studio. Students will learn how to apply BIG to an aluminum printing plate, using it as both a hard ground and a soft ground. Stop-out techniques and etching in copper sulfate will be introduced, and basic intaglio printing strategies will be covered. Baldwin Intaglio Ground (BIG) is a safer substitute for more traditional materials. BIG was invented by printmaker Alex Baldwin of Trefeglwys Print Studio in Wales. It is widely used in university and private print studios.
