In this mokuhanga course, students will learn the traditional methods for creating a mokuhanga (Japanese colour woodcut) print. Procedures include designing the image appropriate to the medium, transfer of the design to the block, and attention to traditional carving. After carving a “key” block you’ll transfer the image to the other side using the hanshita method which ensures perfect registration of additional carved out colour areas. Students can expect to use both sides of one 7” x 9” woodblock to achieve a three colour print on Japanese washi paper to produce a small edition of prints. Students should prepare at least one simple 3 colour image that is no larger than 6.5” x 8” of horizontal or vertical orientation.
