Learn how to make Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky) in this three hour workshop. Start by writing with beeswax on the eggs and dip them into batik dyes, going from the lightest to the darkest colour, until all of the egg is covered. Then remove the beeswax to reveal the colours, symbols and patterns you have created.
There are many traditional designs to choose from, associated with symbolic meaning: Pine boughs stand for strength and growth; stars and the sun symbolize growth and good fortune; spirals are meant to protect; a deer stands for victory and leadership; wheat signifies abundance.
You can follow step by step instructions to create a traditional design, or experiment and create a design of your own. The eggs are decorated in the spring to celebrate Easter and given away as gifts.
All materials included.
