Description:

This 6 week course explores techniques fundamental to making jewelry - beading, stringing and wire wrapping. Each class will focus on a specific topic and related projects. Participants will learn basic elements of colour and design and how to plan each project. You’ll receive an overview of the materials and tools, learn techniques for that topic’s aspect of jewelry making, then practice skills learned by completing 7 projects (or more time permitting). While all skill levels are welcome, this course is designed for those with no prior jewelry-making experience.

Weeks 1 and 2: Beading Basics and 2+ Earring Projects

Learn about the different types of tools and findings used in making jewelry - what they are called, how to use them and ways to be nonconventional in using findings. Beads, caps, headpins, links, hooks and other nickel-free components will be available to design and create different styles of earrings. Choose from stud, clip-on, drop, dangle and chandelier options.

Weeks 3 and 4: Bead Stringing Basics and 3 Bracelet Projects

Bead Stringing is a core skill in jewelry making. Participants will become familiarized with a variety of stringing materials and basic techniques. Learn how to create Bead Soup, make and professionally secure 3 different styles of strung bracelets from start to finish. Beads, stringing materials, nickel-free findings, crimps and closures will be provided to design and make each bracelet.

Weeks 5 and 6: Wire Wrapping Basics and 2 Pendant Necklace Projects

Wire wrapping techniques are used to create loops, coils, and many other decorative elements, often in conjunction with beads or stones. Learn the basics of wire wrapping and how to secure connections for two styles of pendants. Focal beads, cabochons, artistic wire, pendant bails, suede lace, leather cords and closures will be options provided.
