Are you an art-maker who wants to create art with a meaning or message behind it? Unsure of where to start or how to effectively get that message across? This class mixes art-making with art theory and art history to help to teach you skills in putting more meaning into your work. Learn more about visual metaphors, materiality, advanced colour theory, and more, to get you feeling more confident about your art and how it will be read by your audience. Please note that this is an intermediate level course. You should have some basic level of art-making experience (in whatever medium of your choice). If you don’t feel confident in your knowledge about things like the principles of design or basic colour theory, consider taking Art Fundamentals (running Mondays from Sept 21 - October 26) before this course!

Supply list - Please read note

  • A drawing pad (9 x 12 or similar size, with approx. 24 sheets)

  • A set of drawing pencils (At least four pencils: HB, 3B, 2H, B – the set should read similar to these, but they don’t need to be exactly that)

  • Eraser

  • Pencil Sharpener

Note: This class will be open to people who work in any medium, which means the supply list will be unique to you and will change to the needs of your piece(s). For the sake of ease, we’ll mainly be focusing on 2-D work like painting, drawing, collage, some fibre arts, etc., however folks who work in clay and other 3-D materials are welcome to join to plan pieces, but may not get the chance to use their medium of choice within the class itself.

Please note:

  • Attending the full class term is the responsibility of the student. No refunds or credits are issued for missing classes and educators will not schedule any additional instructor-led make-up classes.
  • Refunds are issued up to two weeks before your class starts.  After this period there are no refunds.
  • With 2 or more weeks notice, we deduct 10% payment processing servicing fees from the total amount refunded or offer store credit with no deductions.
