What would happen if you stopped trying to paint ‘perfectly' and simply responded to what was unfolding on the canvas? In this six-week course, participants will explore intuitive painting through guided exercises, layered techniques, and creative prompts that encourage experimentation and personal expression. Together we'll discover how slowing down, observing, and trusting the process can lead to unexpected and meaningful artwork.

Surfaces

1 x 18 × 20" (or larger) stretched canvas (to be developed over the duration of the course)
6 x 8 × 10" canvas boards

Paint

Student-grade acrylic paints (Liquitex Basics, Artist's Loft Level 1, or equivalent):

Titanium White
Primary Yellow
Primary Red (or Quinacridone Magenta)
Primary Blue (or Phthalo Blue)
Burnt Umber
Ultramarine Blue
Black
Any other favourite colours

Brushes

A variety of synthetic brushes, including:

1 large flat brush (1")
1 medium flat brush (½")
1 medium round brush
1 small round/detail brush

Mediums

Matte Medium (approximately 250 mL)
Gloss Medium (approximately 250 mL)

Painting Tools

Palette (plastic, wooden, or disposable palette paper)
Palette knife (plastic or metal)

Explore the expressive possibilities of acrylic painting combined with collage and mixed media in this layered, process-based course. Each week, students will learn a new technique — such as building texture, using collage imagery, stamping patterns, glazing, and storytelling through layered materials — first practicing on a small canvas board before applying the technique to a larger personal painting. Over the course of the program, each participant will gradually build a richly layered artwork that reflects their own creative voice, imagery, and themes. No previous mixed media experience is required.

1 large stretched canvas – 16" x 20” minimum (18" x 24" or similar larger size also suitable)
6 canvas boards – 8" x 10" or 9" x 12"
(One for each weekly technique practice; the 6th can be used for extra experimentation or final touch testing)
