    Please note: Students supply the basic materials for their course (see Supplies List below description). 

    Soft (Dry) Pastel is a very versatile medium allowing itself to be used in a variety of Mixed Media techniques. Dry Pastel can be combined with mediums such as Watercolour, Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint and Collage. Impasto effects can be created through the use of Gel Mediums and Modeling Paste. This course will explore the use of Watercolour, Gel Mediums and Modeling Paste to build the image base and then completed using several Dry Pastel techniques. The exercises will be explained and demonstrated, inspired by compositions of Landscape and Objects (Still Life). This course encourages self expression and it is expected to complete several works during the 6 weeks. 

    Instructor Supplied Materials Fee $15 Includes: Professional Watercolour Paper, Acrylic Modeling Paste & Pastel Medium.

    Supply List Required 

    • Basic Set of 24 Soft Pastels (Preferably Medium Softness or Softer, can be Student or Professional grade) 
    •  2 or 3 Graphite Pencils HB - 2B 
    •  Soft Charcoal Pencil (optional) 
    • Pastel Pencils (optional) 
    •  Basic Set of Tubed Watercolours (Professional Grade is not necessary unless you already have them) 
    •  Watercolour Brushes - 1” Flat, #10 Round (Student Grade) 
    •  Small Palette Knife ¾” 
    •  Empty Plastic Container ( Yogurt , Margarine etc.) 
    •  Masking Tape Neutral Colour ( No Blue or Green Painters Tape)

    ****Please note that the Pastels in this course are NOT Oil Pastels ... Only Soft, Dry Pastels are used in these sessions

    New students learn the basic approaches to Soft Pastel Art and returning students explore more advance techniques. This combined intro/intermediate course covers the material side of Soft Pastels, related art materials and techniques for students new to the medium and those looking to deepen their current knowledge. Pastel artwork is considered a drawing medium but it's versatility allows painterly effects to be developed. Drawing skill is an asset but not required. Several methods of Pastel application will be explored resulting in the completion of 3 to 4 landscape works of art.

    Materials List:

    • 1 soft Charcoal Pencil
    • 1 Kneeded Eraser
    • 1 roll of 3⁄4 in. *Plain Masking Tape*(No blue or green painters tape)
    • A Set of Dry (Soft) Pastel sticks (a minimum 24 colour variety)
    • Medium Soft pastels are required.
    • very soft pastels will be available to try during the sessions.

    Recommended Brands: sold in sets or individual sticks:
    • Medium Soft Brands:
      • Mungyo Gallery
      • Holbein Artist Pastels
      • Rembrandt Soft Pastels
    • Very Soft Brands:
      • Sennelier
      • Schmicke
      • Diane Townsend Thinline or Soft Forms
    Textured pastel paper is required.
    • Any textured or sanded pastel surfaces will work.
    • -1 or 2 sheets 22” x 30” of a neutral gray or warm colour
    • the sheet will be cut in quarters for use during the sessions.
    • Brand recommendations: Canson Touch, Sennelier,
    • Pastel Premier, Colourfix or Pastelmat
    • Some brands are available in smaller sized loose sheet or
    • multi colour pads of 10 sheets which are very useful
    *Quality Soft Pastels and Textured pastel surfaces are available at Wyndham Art Supply in Guelph or online.
    If you own any artist grade dry (soft) Pastels they will be appropriate for use.

    Pastel Pencils are useful but a set of Pastel sticks is required

    In this workshop, for artists new to Soft Pastel or with some experience,

    we'll explore creating art based on identifying shapes and layering. We'll

    start with a short introduction to soft pastel materials and work from urban

    scene source material to assist in composition and inspiration.
