Do you wish you could paint a landscape? Then this course is for you!

A landscape is usually painted from top to bottom and background to foreground. After identifying the background, mid ground and foreground, we will deconstruct a landscape into its various elements (skies, trees and vegetation, water and shorelines) and practice by painting one element each week. You will see your landscape painting evolve, by adding one element at a time.

    Materials List

Each week, you will need to bring:

    • Acrylic Paint: Red (Cad Red, Medium Red – avoid Magenta), Blue (Ultramarine) and Yellow (Medium Yellow), White, Black, Raw Siena, Burnt Umber.  Suggested Paint Brands: Student Grades, ie. Liquitex, Artists Loft
    • Acrylic Brushes: An assortment of flat and round brushes (i.e 1” Flat, ½” flat, ¼” flat) of various sizes and one large 2” brush (dollar store) for large washes.
    • Painting Surface: Canvas paper or mixed medium paper for practice exercises
    • One 11”x14” canvas for your final landscape painting.

Using Paul Klee's abstract art images as inspiration we will first cut our own stencils: circles, squares, squiggly lines and other geometric shapes. Using acrylic paint, gelli plates and a multi-print process you will create your own abstract  Klee- like piece of art! All materials will be supplied, you just bring your sense of fun and creativity!

Primary colours: Red, Blue and Yellow are basic hues that cannot be created by mixing other colours together and they are the building blocks of all other colours. In this workshop you will learn how to mix secondary colours: greens, oranges and violet and tertiary colours: yellow green, red orange and blue violet. We'll identify complementary colours and learn how to 'desaturate" a colour with its complement. By the end of this 3-hour workshop you will have a better understanding of the possible colours in your acrylic 'paintbox' and a colour wheel to use as a future reference. All materials will be supplied.
